What is dancehall you ask?Dancehall reggae, is also known as raggamuffin, toasting, chatting, chanting, reggae rap, DJ stylee, ragga, Jamaican hip hop, rub-a-dub, hard-core, combination style, a dub plate, culture, jungle or drum & bass... It is the sound of rapid fire Jamaican patois vocals (chatting or chanting) and infectious melodies over hypnotizing rhythms of pulsating beats and hard hitting bass. Although this genre is new to the CCM market, it is by far the most popular style of reggae music today. On any given week over 75% of the albums found on Billboard Magazine's "Top Reggae Albums" chart are dancehall compilations. This musical style was born in the dancehalls of Jamaica decades ago and, when taken to Jamaica Queens, New York, evolved into what we know today as rap/hip hop music. This predecessor of today's urban music in the USA is still growing stronger than ever, with Jamaica boasting more record releases each year than any other country in the world. As they say, it's "The big, big music from the little rock." While reggae music was spread internationally by the likes of Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, its sibling, "dancehall," has been spread worldwide by names such as Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man, Stitchie, Papa San, and Chevelle Franklyn. This style of reggae, long known for its lewd lyrics and questionable representations, has taken a turn for the better with seven of the most popular artists recently becoming born again Christians. Instead of forsaking the dancehalls upon conversion, these popular artists are going back from where they came to communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ clearly to the youths of this wayward generation. |
